Wow Terms

Terms commonly used by players

A

Aggro
When a target focuses on you or your group
Adds
When you see people say 'adds' they are talking about the additional creatures/mobs that can be needed to kill

B

BRD
This is the Blackrock Depths dungeon from classic WoW
Boomkin
Balance specialization druid, almost anything with "kin" at the end of it relates to a balance druid i.e Failkin, moonkin.
Boss
A Boss is always a stronger NPC and can have a unique name, spells and greater loot drops. For example, trash in Molten Core may have between 100k - 200k health, were as Ragnaros (the Boss) has over 1,000k (1M) health.

C

Cata
Cata is refering to the 'Cataclysm' expansion pack.
Classic
This is the first wow game. Although the originals were just called Warcraft, this is the first in the World of Warcraft series.

D

Darn
'Darnassus' is the major city for the Night Elves
DPS
DPS means Damage Per Second. The higher your DPS the faster you can kill raid bosses and the more damage you can do in less time.

E

EoE
EoE is for the raid 'Eye of Eternity'

F

FL
The raid 'Firelands' is shortened by players to FL.

G

GL
'Group Loot' is a loot system that makes items at or above the loot tresh holde appear in a Need, Greed or Pass box for every member, the highest roll on a Need wins, otherwise the highest on Greed will win. If there is a skilled enchanter in the group players can also roll Disenchant, which is equal to a greed but you receive the disenchanted materials.
Game Master (GM)
A Game Master or GM is part of the blizzard staff that helps players out with in-game issues. Although a lot of the time they are more for guidance, as lost/deleted items can be restored through the website, your previously completed quests can be tracked and found on Wowhead.com and a lot of technical difficulties cannot be fixed by GMs (needs to be done by programmers). They still can come in handy!

H

HP
HP means health Points and refers to the amount of health someone has. At starting level you can start between 50-120 HP and can work up to 600,000+ HP as a 90 tank
Hearthstone (HS)
Hearthstone will allow you to travel back to your saved location (most likely an inn). If you lose your HS you can obtain another by talking to an Innkeeper and setting that place as your hearthstone.
Hero/ TW
This means to 'pop' or activate the spell Heroism (if you are a shaman, Time Warp if you are a mage or Ancient Histeria if you are a Beast Mastery specced hunter).

I

IF
'Ironforge' is the main city for Dwarves & Gnomes (although Gnomeregan is being reclaimed for gnomes and is currently an instance/dungeon)
Instance
An Instance is a zone that has the same layout and the exact same trash in every location for everyone, but you can enter an instance with a group of people and only that group can see what is going on. For example, a dungeon. Only the 1-5 people in your party can see that instance and what adds are alive or dead.
IRL
IRL stands for 'In Real Life' meaning outside the game, reality.

J

JK
used in texting in real life aswell, JK stands for 'Just Kidding' or sometimes JJ for 'just joking'.

K

KEK
KEK is what alliance see when a horde player types 'lol' into chat, so alliance say 'kek' for horde to see LOL appear.
Kara
Kara refers to the Karazahn raid instance in Deadwind Pass

L

Loot
Loot is the item(s) that can drop from killing an NPC. Rares drop better items than a random add in the wild, dungeon bosses drop even better gear and raid bosses tend to drop the best gear. If a raid/dungeon is done on Heroic the loot is even better quality.
LFM
LFM stands for 'Looking For More' usually for a group quest, dungeon, raid or an achievement that requires a good few people.
LFR
LFR stands for 'Looking For Raid'. This person is usually looking to join a raid group rather than to start/lead one.
LFG
LFG stands for 'Looking for Group' basically along the lines of LFM & LFR but may be more so for quests/achievements.
LBRS
LBRS stands for 'Lower Black Rock Spire' and is part of the Blackrock dungeons (UBRS, LBRS and BRD)

M

Mats
'materials' are the items required to craft an item using your professions such as Cooking, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking ect.
Masterloot (ML)
When a person is masterlooter or they loot type of the group is set to masterloot, anything that drops above the loot thresh hold (if set to Epic, any epic item that drops is under ML control) the MasterLooter must click on that item and assign it to a person (usually who ever needs it most or rolls the highest). All loot is considered the Masterlooters items unless otherwise stated in chat (for GMs).

N

NPC
NPC stands for Non-Player Character. These are the people that gives you your quests, buys your junk and repairs your gear. They are also the raid bosses, the king of stormwind, the leader of the horde.
Nuke
Nuke means to give it all you got, pop you cooldowns and burn their Health down!

O

Org
'Orgrimmar' is the main city for the Orcs & Trolls (also Sen'Jin Isle being reclaimed for trolls)
OP
OP stands for 'Over Powered' and is often reference to a certain class or item. For example if paladins could use Lay on Hands (heals for 100% of health, instant cast, 10 min Cooldown) with no cooldown then that would be considered OP as they wouldn't die.

P

Pala / Pally
Pala or Pally refers to the Paladin class and can have many spin offs like failadin, retradin (retribution spec paladin) ect.

Q

Quality
This refers to how high on the quality scale an item is. There are 6 types of quality. Poor , Common , Uncommon, Rare, Epic & Legendary !
QQ
When someone says stop QQing it means to stop crying or quiting. For example 'Less QQ more pew pew!' meaning stop crying and focus on DPS!

R

Randoms
When someone says 'Wanna do Randoms?' they mean que for random dungeons (LFM) as you can get extra experience/currency for doing randoms rather than specific dungeons.

S

SM
'Silvermoon' is the main city for the Blood Elves
SSC
This is the 'Serpentshrine Cavern' raid from the Burning Crusade expansion

T

TLPD
This stands for 'Time-Lost Proto Drake' a mount that drops off of a heavily farmed rare spawn in Storm Peaks, Northrend.
TBC (BC)
TBC means 'The Burning Crusade' expansion pack, second in the series.
TB
TB is the main city for Taurens 'Thunder Bluff'

U

Uld
Uld is shortened for the WoTLK raid 'Ulduar'
UC
'Undercity' is the main city for Undead/Forsaken located in Tirisfal Glades.
UBRS
UBRS stands for 'Upper Black Rock Spire' a dungeon from classic / vanilla wow. also part of LBRS

V

Vanilla
Vanilla is the same as classic, refering to the first WoW game.

W

WoTLK
WoTLK refers to the expansion pack called 'Wrath of The Lich King'
WTB
WTB stands for 'want to buy' and is commonly seen in /2 (trade channel in major cities) it is followed by a linked item.
WoW
WoW stands for the game 'World of Warcraft'
WTS
WTS stands for 'want to sell' also followed by a linked item with a starting price or offer
WTT
WTT stands for 'want to trade' and is commonly linked with 2 items or so.

X

X-realm
This is for 'cross-realm' as you can now do dungeons, most raids and even quest cross realm (with another server)

Y

Y
Players often use 'y' to say yes or why, and can be confusing at times

Z

Zerg
Zerg is the same as nuke, to basically give it all you have, pop all cooldowns and burn the boss's health down A.S.A.P!
